With a greater portion of the American population concerning themselves with environmental issues it's nice to know that there are some cities that are taking notice as well. If you're a resident of Alexandria and you have a love for the trees and wildlife around you than you will be happy to know that they are an Eco-City with a plan for the preservation and promotion of the best possible environmental conditions the city can support. This means everyone from a dealership marketing company to an average household working together and building on the initiatives started by the city.
The Eco-City Alexandria program started in the spring of 2007 with a partnership with the Virginia Tech Department of Urban Affairs and Planning, known as the UAP. It was meant to create an Eco-City Charter and Environmental Action Plan that would aid the city in getting a higher level of sustainability. This brought together members of City Council, the City Staff and created the Environmental Policy Commission to oversee operations that would affect a store selling Bahco tools to a school in the area. This body built the Environmental Action Plan 2030 as a roadmap to what the city would like to accomplish in the next two decades.
This initiative has always kept the residents of the city in mind when moving forward and establishing new programs. Early on in the process they hosted an Eco-City Summit where residents could come and propose ideas and ask questions. They also have an online application that allows you to take the Eco-City Challenge to see what more you and your family can do to reduce your carbon footprints. These practices can be done if you're living in Alexandria or visiting your winter home in Mexico beachfront real estate.
