Looking for something to do while visiting a friend with an Alexandria zip code? Maybe you live in the city yourself, and want to get to know a bit more about what there is to do for fun. Whether you are looking for a museum or a day spa, Vancouver based or living right here in the city, you will find what you are looking for. Here are a few highlights.

George Washington Memorial Parkway

If you were to look down and see this feature from the air, it might look like nothing more than a modern highway. However, GW Parkway is an important part of our national heritage, and many people pack cloth diapers for their kids, snacks for themselves, and cameras and take tours up and down it every day. The road is maintained by the National Park Service, and includes many historic points of interest and memorials important to our nation's identity.

Old Town

If you really want to get intimate with the history of the United States of America, you are definitely want to sign up for a tour of Old Town. This section of the city includes such historic residences as the house where Robert E. Lee grew up, and the townhouse of George Washington. These houses are either replicated or refurbished, of course; Lee's includes modern bathroom furniture. Vanities and other additions have been placed for public convenience.

Historic architecture and residences are not the only tour worthy parts of Old Town. You will also find a wide variety of antique shops, art galleries, and restaurants throughout the area. Eating spots run the gamut from five star to family operations complete with aquarium decorations and games.

The diversity of Old Town is quite amazing. If you think bus tours are the only options, you are in for a real treat. You can take in the sites from river cruise boats which dock at various popular stops up and down the Potomac. It's a lot better than gambling on the get a car sweepstakes that self directed tours find so frustrating!

Cameron Run Regional Park

Most of the time, you will find popular family amusement parks run privately (and expensively!). Not so in Alexandria! If your kids are tired of all the history (who can really blame them) you might want to schedule a day for visiting this popular city attraction. It's a regional park run by the city, and includes not only green space but a wave pool, water slides, other water themed rides, batting cages, and a miniature golf course! It's a great outing to dangle in front of your kids as you tour the more scholastic attractions the city has to offer.
